5 out of 5 stars Honesty ... insight ... laughs ... genius   November 2, 2008
-- Calls socializing the point-scoring game it is.

-- Calls 'alternative' the conformity-gone-mad it is.

4 out of 5 stars Great bathroom read!   November 1, 2008

I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. It's short funny stories make it the perfect book as extra entertainment for the pooping experience.

2 out of 5 stars I'm not white + I like 95% of the things mentioned in the book = I feel being left out   October 19, 2008

My title says it all. It almost feels like I'm not entitled to go to Whole Food or brag about recycling cans because I'm not white. Don't tell me I'm missing point of the book--if it is possible to be interpreted this way then it is already problematic enough.
This book may work under a different title, but terming the group "white people" is simply racism. Of the white-elitist type.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ..........   October 18, 2008
This book was introduced to me by a friend......loved it so much I bought 3 copies on Amazon. One for me, 2 others to pass on to friends. This book is loaded w/witty sarcasm.......a trait I share w/all my close friends. You've got to appreciate Landers truthful look at how we white people really are. We all just need to get over ourselves & that's Landers bottom line. **And yes, I am a HUGE Devid Sedaris fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Unbearable Whiteness of Being   October 12, 2008
There are many thickets one can get caught in discussing a satire as effective as this one. (Did you see the "one-star" reader review with 74 comments? Go look!) So let me come at my topic this way:

I picked this book up in a bookstore, browsed it, chuckled in self-recognition at some of its entries, and later bought it. I did not regret the decision. Why? This book is funny. Very funny.

Of course, the objections one could raise to this book are legion, but to do so is to miss the point entirely. (In fact, the objections often help to prove the author's subtext, in a way.) I will point out that the type of white person skewered by author Christian Lander is a narrow demographic of the group entire; specifically, it's composed of liberal arts college graduates. (Non-members of this category are simply referred to as the "wrong kind" of white people.)

Fair enough; satire does need a focus. Oh hey, according to the chart at the back of the book, I am only rate as 25% white! That's weird; I guess I laughed more in recognition than self-recognition. I must know a lot of white people.

Sidenote: I was disappointed to find that Christian Lander is white. Rats! Here I initially thought this book was the work of a gimlet-eyed person of color.
