great overview January 1, 2009 This is a fantastic book to give you an overview of Catholicism. I am not Catholic, but a lot of my in-laws are, and having sat through a lot of masses I was very curious to understand more. This book did the trick. Things are explained in a very clear way, and the authors never belittle other religions. The authors periodically went over the same material repeatedly, ie. sometimes the same facts were given in various chapters. I liked that, as it make it all sink in more. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to start to learn more.
As for why only 4 stars, consider these sentences, from page 109 talking about confirmation: "It's an unfortunate fact that after some are confirmed, they never come back for high school religious education. Human nature is such that some parental guidance, authority, and sometimes force are needed to get Johnny or Susie to fulfill their Sunday obligation." If that sounds a bit preachy, that's because, well, it is. But hey, the two authors are priests, and that's what they do. That kind of thing is kept to a minimum, but it is present.
Very useful! January 1, 2009 I'm a big fan of the Dummies series, so when I want to learn about something, I tend to lean toward picking up one of their books (among others). I'm Catholic, but there have always been some things that escaped me, and this book was helpful in explaining many of those things, and more. I'd still recommend picking up one of those books that specifically cover Mass in detail if some of the customs and actions have befuddled you. Peace be with you...!
Catholicism For Dummies December 16, 2008 My husband and I teach different ministries groups at our local Catholic Church and we use this book as a teaching source. It is very easy to understand especially for our elderly parishoners and teens. Alot of the parishoners have ordered this book for their own personal enrichment.
Catholocism for Dummies November 29, 2008 This book is very informative, and writen in an easy to read format. It has been a very long time since I've embarked on an in depth study of the Holy Roman Catholic faith I was blessed with at my infant baptism. I plan to pass it forward to others, like me, who wish to know more about their faith without needing a degreed theologan sitting down beside them. Thanks to the two good "Fathers" who wrote this book. It has been a real blessing to me.
Catholicism for Dummies November 29, 2008 Excellant book for anyone who is not a Catholic and "thinks" they know, oh so much, about Catholics and the heresies they think that they teach. It is also excellant for the Southern Baptists who view Catholics as non-christian (this is a prevalent view in the south). It is also an excellant book for ALL Catholics for in it is a lot of information that they did not learn in catechism class.
