2 out of 5 stars The Return of Joe Mad!   January 5, 2009

I'll give this 2 stars because I enjoyed the artwork and the production values on this hardcover are nice.

I bothered to read Ultimates 3 in its monthly form and purchase the hardcover because I am a huge fan of Joe Madureira's artwork, have been for years. I have also enjoyed a lot of Jeph Loeb's work in the past. Unfortunately, these two big talents coming together did not produce such a great piece of work.

Loeb's writing is really weak on this book. The dialogue is garbage, the characters have no depth, and the plot is lame. I think Loeb was trying to write something that would be fun for Madureira to draw, and there are some cool visual moments but there is no substance. Don't get me wrong, I love straight up fun comics with over the top action and all that, but something about Ultimates 3 is just not fun at all. Uncalled for vulgarity and weak attempts at being dark and edgy just eliminate any "fun" that might have popped up in this book.

Joe Mad! is a brilliant artist. I personally think he has the capacity to be the most exciting stylized penciller in American comics. I wish there were more artists like him with such highly developed personal styles and not so many stiff photo-tracers and house style adherants. That said, I don't think Ultimates 3 is his best work. I think his skills are at an incredibly high level but there are moments throughout this book that reveal an artist feeling the pressures of time restraints. It is well known that Joe is working in the videogame industry and was in fact working in that industry while working on Ultimates 3. I have seen it mentioned that he had something like 3 full time jobs while working on this book. So, the lack of polish on the pencil art is not totally unexplained/surprising, just disappointing. Critical as I am, Joe's artwork on this book is still great stuff, filled with energy and style that stands head and shoulders above most other superstar comics artists. Christian Lichtner's coloring is great too, though it prints a bit dark in places.

This collection also lacks any interesting/exclusive bonus material which is a big negative in my opinion.

If anything, buy this for the artwork. Personally, I hope Joe Madureira comes back and finishes his creator-owned property, Battle Chasers, and takes his sweet time producing some amazing artwork!

1 out of 5 stars Ungodly awful   January 1, 2009

What has happened to Jeph Loeb? Is this really the same guy who gave us those classic Batman tales like The Long Halloween and Dark Victory? Is this really the same guy that worked magic with Daredevil: Yellow and Spider-Man: Blue? Apparently it is, and now he's doing the Ultimates; the title that was created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch and never stopped being massively entertaining. With Ultimates 3, Loeb manages to not only tarnish his own name, but also the work laid before by Millar and Hitch, as the storyarc begins with the mysterious murder of the Scarlet Witch. What develops afterward are some of the most non-sensical plot developments and atrocious dialogue that you'll find in a mainstream comic today. Seriously, Ultimates 3 is so bad that it'll cause you a migraine in the very least, and the ultra-ridiculous artwork from longtime Uncanny X-Men artist Joe Madureira doesn't help make matters any better either. By the end of Ultimates 3, Loeb apparently plants seeds for the allegedly universe shattering Ultimatum, which is supposed to change the Ultimate universe forever. One can only hope that whatever happens and changes is only for the better, and what you find here in Ultimates 3 will end up being nothing more than a bad memory. Avoid.

Its actually, titled THE ULTIMATES: WHO KILLED THE SCARLET WITCH?
The art is phenomenal. The story line - okay. Also, this book is actually already available.
Read through it once, planning on selling it as soon as that option is available on this site.
