Product Description

Dark forces are at work at the House of Night and fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird’s adventures at the school take a mysterious turn. Those who appear to be friends are turning out to be enemies. And oddly enough, sworn enemies are also turning into friends. So begins the gripping third installment of this “highly addictive series” (Romantic Times), in which Zoey’s mettle will be tested like never before. Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity. Speaking of rare: Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected and rare position of having three boyfriends. Mix a little bloodlust into the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster. Just when it seems things couldn’t get any tougher, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith, and Zoey’s horrid step-father in particular, are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres. But, as Zoey and her friends so often find out, how things appear rarely reflects the truth…

5 out of 5 stars The Character Development is Amazing!!   January 4, 2009
This is the third in the House of Night series. I am just flabbergasted that the character development continues to deepen. The characters become more and more demensional. I have read the Twilight series and loved that--but this story is so different and as equally engrossing. I love the spiritual take on vampires the authors use. I really like the weaving of the native american traditions in the story to give the main character more depth, making the fact that she was Marked (book 1),very believable. The descriptions of teen life can at times be very elementry and juvenile, but so are teens. I was at first irritated by some of the teen characters overreactions to situations, and then remembered my own "over the deep-end" reactions when I was that age. The descriptions of the tattoos and rituals are very delicate and beautiful. I think Kristin and PC have a unique take on a vampire/teen/first love tale. I look forward to the next books in the series.

3 out of 5 stars So-So   January 1, 2009
While this book was enjoyable, it was a disappointment compared to the first two books in the House of Night series. Chosen focuses mainly on the love trapezoid Zoey is in between her Marked boyfriend, Imprinted ex-boyfriend, and vampyre professor. While it's nice to see these messy relationships of hers finally get resolved, they overshadow more important -- and more interesting -- plotlines in the book. Stevie Rae, for example, is now undead, closely resembling the stereotypical vampires perpetuated by pop culture, but is holding on to enough of her humanity to give Zoey hope that she can save her. The scenes revolving around this plotline are by far the most intriguing and investing to read, and it's a shame there weren't more to balance out the ones of Zoey's romantic entanglements. Also, the murdered vampyres on campus plants seeds for a promising storyline in the future books, but hardly sticks in your mind throughout this one. Zoey makes mistakes and has to live with them, but her consistently amusing voice keeps Chosen from becoming too dreary. Overall, this book was a fast read, albeit a bit slow in the beginning with all the recapping, and fans of the series should definitely check it out.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe a wee bit too far...   December 31, 2008

I'll admit, there's a scene in this book that has my inner adolescent teenage girl squealing and my adult self cringing. I can see the point of it in the context of the storyline, and I understand that it is just fiction, but still. It makes me uneasy in a lot of ways. If you haven't read it, cover your eyes for the next few lines, because it's a pivotal part of the book and I can't really give any credibility to the review without talking about it. Now, I understand why Zoey sleeps with him - it's bloodlust and teenage-vamp hormones and all of that. And I see that there's a little bit of a message in the end, that she made a bad, rash decision. But the fact that a guy in his mid-20s basically seduces a 16-year-old-girl (or she might have turned 17 by then? I can't remember, honestly) is a little uncomfortable. Of course, when I was 16/17 I'd have thought it was a dream come true. Still, I suppose the point is that the books are not meant to be sunshine and light, and that bad, uncomfortable things happen. I just thought I'd toss that out there since some people might be a little more than simply discomfited by it.

Other than that little bit, the book continues on its rather predictable path. Girl saves world but has betrayed friends and must now fight to get them back. Not all that looks evil is evil, blah blah blah. The writing remains engaging, and I admit that the minute I got to the end I wanted the next book (it's a slightly hanging end, though nothing too bad). But after a few days it all begins to fade and I don't feel that strong of an urge to continue. I have to wonder if, when the next book comes out, I'll feel any pull to read it. I might pick it up if I remember, but I can't say I'll be waiting on pins and needles.

Overall it's a fun and entertaining series while you read it, but nothing that will really stick with you.

3 out of 5 stars Decent   December 16, 2008
Bought the series after I read the Twilight set. Not quite up to par with that series. But still a decent read. Took me a while to get into them.
