The Big Picture December 5, 2008 My rating of 5 stars is based on some of Ben Carson's other books. The Big Picture is an excellent memoir of his life and role as the world's most foremost neurosurgeon. His stories about the struggles endured in his personal life had put into perspective for me the Big Picture of things. Even someone as great as the world's most sought out neurosurgeon had to stumble across things like predjudice, backstabbing, and setbacks within his own career. These things did not make him retreat or hide. We see how he deals with such obstacles in a graceful way, with him ultimately shining at the end. What I also like about this book is he describes the downfall of the healthcare industry and gives us glimpse into the politics of the healthcase system from a physician's point-of-view. Even though this story was written as an inspirational, Christian view-point, I have never found any of his books to be overly preachy or overwhelmingly Christian in philosophy and does not offend those who may not be Christian sensibility (like myself). I highly recommend this book to anyone, of any background, of any profession especially in times of doubt/support/encouragement/need.... it will definately bring into focus the Big Picture of things.
A gentle, bold voice November 6, 2008 Some great ideas here from a gentle voice. Dr Ben Carson opens with a very moving narrative, recalling early infant craniopagus separations.
Dr. Carson lays out a strong critique of the "victim mentality", not only dismantling this corrosive worldview. But he offers a memorable acronym, that systematically points the way out of this way destructive thought process. He also clarifies the definition of true success in terms that are often viewed as countercultural, this is quite refreshing.
We are fortunate to have a leader such as Dr. Carson alive today. He speaks of truth, that is based not on media trend, but on a real, purposeful Christian faith, a reality that is not "veneer church religion", but one of a living faith based on bold actionable principles.
Truly an exceptional man - Dr. Ben Carson September 4, 2008 Dr. Carson is the leading pediatric neurosurgeon in the world and the amazing fact is that he grew up in a single parent family in the ghetto and through the stength and power of a courageous mother, he rose to the top of his profession. He, like Bill Cosby, challenges young people of all races to over come their anger and victim mentality and strive for excellence. A great human being and great teacher!
Truly Inspiring June 4, 2008 Since meeting Dr. Carson personally two months ago, I have become thoroughly engrossed in his personal journey to success while maintaining a deep faith and abiding love for humankind. His writing is compelling and challenging. Once starting this book, I couldn't put it down.
A truly educational piece of literature! March 14, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is my first Ben Carson book, and I can hardly finish without constantly stopping to tell someone about this amazing book! I had the brief opportunity to meet this author in February of this year, and I was amamzed then, but after starting the book I hardly know what to say. Dr. Carson has angel's wings! He is a special anointed vessel sent by God! He demonstrates through The Big Picture the ability to relate to all levels of society. He understands the pangs of the least and the priviledge of the greatest. He graciously becomes transparent and reveals of himself for the benefit of the reader. His pearls of wisdom and sound advise yield a real education when reading his book. Everyone needs to read The Big Picture and to apply its principles. I appreciate him sharing in such a meaningful way!
